Steadfast and Unyielding Faith and Confidence in God – By Dan Spitz
Most likely, we’re all familiar with the story of David slaying Goliath. Goliath was a giant and seemed unbeatable by most standards, and David certainly was not a very likely choice to slay the giant! He was the youngest of his brothers and was not even a fulltime soldier, because he spent most of his time tending the sheep and helping his father as his other brothers fought the battles.
But King Saul listened to David as he stated his case for going up against Goliath, and as my minister pointed out, King Saul was probably a lot more impressed with David’s faith and confidence in the “living God” than his confessions of killing lions and other beasts. The king might not have even believed those stories, but regardless of that, he was aware of David’s trust in the Lord and he trusted David.
And since David was too small or skinny to wear the armor commonly worn for battle, he shed the protection and went to face Goliath with just his sling and five stones. Not only did he meet the challenge; we are actually told that he “quickly ran out to meet Goliath.” So there was no hesitation on his part, because he had no fear or doubt that he would do exactly what he said he could do; because David knew the battle was the Lord’s and that God would receive all the glory and honor because of his obedience, so he declared victory in the name of the Lord. David never once claimed victory in his own strength, because he knew and understood that it was about what God was doing through him and enabled him to do with his every day strength.
As we relate this to our stand for marriage restoration, remember that God has granted us the strength to endure, persevere, and to slay and conquer our giants. And He gives us the grace to trust and believe in Him with all of our hearts, and that the battle is His and that HE WILL BE VICTORIOUS in the spiritual war Satan has waged to steal, kill, and destroy our marriages and families.
So it is my most sincere hope and prayer that we all continue to grow in our faith, having the knowledge and understanding of God’s Word so that our faith and confidence in Him is so steadfast and unyielding that we will run out to meet our giants, because we know they WILL BE slain and defeated!! And what a glorious and wonderful tribute to our Lord and Savior it WILL BE when our marriages are healed and restored!
Father, we praise You and thank You for Your promise that our giants will be slain in Your mighty name. Lord, help us to continue in faith, with steadfast trust and belief and unyielding confidence that nothing can defeat Your purposes for our lives and the restoration of our marriages. We ask You to be with our beloved spouses and soften their hearts, giving them that same confidence in You; trusting You to re-establish love and respect in our relationships, and making us the husbands and wives that You intended for us to be in the beginning. In Your Son’s Holy Name, Amen
1 Samuel 17:4-10 (NLT)
Then Goliath, a Philistine champion from Gath, came out of the Philistine ranks to face the forces of Israel. He was over nine feet tall! He wore a bronze helmet, and his bronze coat of mail weighed 125 pounds. He also wore bronze leg armor, and he carried a bronze javelin on his shoulder. The shaft of his spear was as heavy and thick as a weaver’s beam, tipped with an iron spearhead that weighed 15 pounds. His armor bearer walked ahead of him carrying a shield.
Goliath stood and shouted a taunt across to the Israelites. “Why are you all coming out to fight?” he called. “I am the Philistine champion, but you are only the servants of Saul. Choose one man to come down here and fight me! If he kills me, then we will be your slaves. But if I kill him, you will be our slaves! I defy the armies of Israel today! Send me a man who will fight me!”
1 Samuel 17:41-49 (NLT)
Goliath walked out toward David with his shield bearer ahead of him, sneering in contempt at this ruddy-faced boy. “Am I a dog,” he roared at David, “that you come at me with a stick?” And he cursed David by the names of his gods. “Come over here, and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and wild animals!” Goliath yelled.
David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! And everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!”
As Goliath moved closer to attack, David quickly ran out to meet him. Reaching into his shepherd’s bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground.
